DEATH VALLEY SURFERS : More... Beer !

The DEATH VALLEY SURFERS are back! Nonetheless the guys surrounding former HIGHLINERS-drummer Russ Surfer, who also worked as a driver and stage hand for KING KURT back in the days and experienced baptism by beer while cleaning the stage from the residues of the wheel of misfortune.have a good reputation concerning uncompromising live shows as well as delivering great music in case something is to be released. This year they offer us three tracks on a CD called „More…Beer“ (Punkabilly Records). And who would honestly refuse another song by this band or another drink? The first thing that catched my eye ist he fact that the three tracks feature Dick Dynamite ((DICK DYNAMITE AND) THE DOPPELGANGERS) on double bass as well as on backing vocals, dobro, guitar and violin (!). That’s damn cool, as well as the appearance of Mark Horse (ex BONE ORCHARD and LYDIA LUNCH) on guitar in the case of „Milner“. Dick Dynamite who is still thankfull for Russ Surfer‘s help to get some DOPPELGANGER-gigs in Great Britain long ago, also did the mixing together with the DVS-frontman. So far for the parameters of this release. And the music? Well, how could a song culminating in the line „She wanted more… so I had another beer“ be bad? Especially if it is performed with the support of a great honking saxophone (John Reddington) and some fine Honkytonk-piano (Jay Vee)? If you don’t start forgetting about your troubles while listening to this track, you should ask your psychiatrist for different drugs. I won’t say, the song is like the classics of KING KURT (did you see, what „Banana Banana“ caused in Pinada these days?), but the track is driven by the same uplifting spirit. I am not sure if the sun starts shining out of your backside, if you swallow the CD, but I can assure you, that the earal use will make you feel much better. Hasu from THE PEACOCKS once said, that If you're a Psychobilly Musician, you need to have played in DVS once in your life. The lyrics gives a hint back to „Surfer Jones“ by THE HIGHLINERS and indeed it is a number written and released by THE HIGHLINERS (including Russ) on their „Fetish Party E.P.“ in 1997. If you have the same problem as me and can’t put your toes into the water while riding a wave (this is basically what surfers call „Hang Ten“), enjoy this party-track with it’s mixture of infecting beat, crisp guitar and super sexy hammond organ. Let me reveal to you, that the Dix Mix of „Milner“ with ist country-reminiscences is as compelling as the other two tracks. A nice alternating bass line is building the foundation for a song that slowly increases dynamics, addin more drums first and he violin of Dick Dynamite (see above) later. Less then ten minutes of music might not seem that much. But if it is so much fun it is 100% worth the nice price. Support this band by buying this small but groovy output. It is coming in a nice digipack that won’t leave any CD-sceptic disappointed. Please don’t be put off by the label name. This music has nothing to do with fashionable punkabilly. It is crazy Rock’n’Roll in the best sense. As I can’t offer you one of the new tracks here (just get them!) here’s a live version of „Harlow Man“ from 2016 to get you into the mood: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvzMiIVSKHo ( Revieuw done by the Psychocouch)
