If it was tough for the boys and men who made up the vast majority of the purveyors of the exciting new hillbilly rock in the mid 1950s, the adversity was almost unbearable for the few women who tried to make their living as rockabilly singers.
With the puritan prejudices against so-called "lewd body movements" and "inappropriate clothing" magnified ten-fold for the southern females, its a wonder that any of them entered the fray in the first place, let alone persevered at making a career out of it.
This new El Toro set explores the birth of rockabilly from the distaff point of view during the first few years following the cataclysm, from established country stars and veteran performers such as Rose Maddox and Jean Chapel to regional heroines like Abbie Neal and The Collins Kids, and from Rockabilly Queens like Wanda, Janis and Brenda to obscure delights such as Dottie Jones and Betty Barnes.
